First Reading: 1 Kings 19:9a;11-13a
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 85:8ab and 9;10-11;12-13 (R. 7)
Second Reading: Romans 9:1-5
Gospel Acclamation: Psalm 130:5
Gospel: Matthew 14:22-33
My reflection is based on the Gospel reading...
Look unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our Faith (Hebrew 12:2)- this means to keep our gaze steadily and keep focused on Jesus.
As long as Peter's gaze, focus and faith were centered on Jesus, he reigned supreme above principalities, powers and conditions around and beneath his feet, just like his Master; but as soon as he lost focus, he began to sink.
Most times, we often look at the ambiguity of our problems instead of the Omnipotence of our God. We tell God about the might of our fears and challenges instead of telling our challenges how mighty our God is.
Beloved, Jesus has given us authority over all powers, both natural and supernatural, and to truly manifest these powers, we must be connected and rooted in Him, else we sink under them.
Praise God!
What do you hear as a true believer?
It is of utmost importance for me as a true believer to always avail my ear, to listen when God speaks to me.
I should not be distracted by the circumstances surrounding at a time, instead I should be able to listen to God's instructions.
In the first reading, despite all the noise and storms on mount Horeb, God did not appear to prophet Elijah but only in a gentle and silent breeze. In the gospel reading, we see how Jesus Christ restore peace and calm to the disciples in a silent voice. At first, their minds and hearts were troubled because of the storm and waves of the sea but when Jesus brought calm to them, they were at peace.
Lessons:
✔️ We need to experience God in the silence.
✔️ We should not allow the storm of life to distract us from experiencing God in the silence.
✔️ No matter the situation, difficulty, trouble and condition we find ourselves today, let us always call on Jesus Christ to calm every storm in our lives like he did to the disciples in the gospel reading.
✔️ We should learn not to doubt God's work in our lives like Peter, so that we do not sink into the storm.
✔️ When we find ourselves sinking in the troubles of this world, we should always cry out to Master Jesus who is ever ready to come to our aid.
The world today is filled with so much noise both on social media and offline; this makes it harder for us as Christians.
Jesus in the gospel reading dismissed the crowd first and then went up to pray.
Likewise, we need to learn to shut out the noise in our lives in order to hear God. The noise in our lives could be our problems, pains, even physical things that distract us during prayers.
My reflection today, is from the first reading which explains to us how we can communicate to God.
In life, how do I seek God's face?
How do I approach Him?
Is it in the might wind?
Is it in the most widest fire?
Although, God reveals himself to us in different ways just like he did to Moses in the desert .
But sometimes in life, we need to first seek God in that cool, calming and serene environment; an environment which is free from noise then, we can communicate with the Divine being.
May God continue to bless his word in our hearts through Christ our Lord, Amen.
My reflection from the Gospel...
This narrative of the disciples' encounter with Jesus on the sea, is a typical reaction of most Christians in time of crisis.
First of all, all was well in the beginning of the journey and as long as that was the case, their focus was not on Jesus, and because they did not recognize the presence of Jesus in the boat even though he was not physically there with them, they reacted carnally to the situation they found themselves.
In our journey here on earth, we must allow the word of God to be our strength, for God is true to his promises. If he says that he will be with us in every situation, whether inside fire or the deepest ocean , he will surely be there. There is nothing to fear when God is involved. It was Jesus who asked them go into the boat to the other side. That should be enough assurance for them, because there is no way he would send them away to go and perish at sea, but their faithlessness got the better of them then.
We should be ceaselessly praying for an increase in faith to remove useless fear from our lives, so that trusting and standing on the word of God, we would not create room for negative promptings from the evil one.
Thanks for sharing.
